Common Questions About Buying a 125cc Bike

No. If you are 17 or older, you can ride a 125cc motorcycle with just a provisional licence and a valid CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate. You must display L-plates (L-plates in Wales) at all times and cannot carry passengers.
Most modern 4-stroke 125cc bikes will comfortably reach 60-70mph. Sportier models like the Yamaha YZF-R125 or Lexmoto LXR usually sit at the higher end of this range, while basic commuters are tuned for fuel efficiency rather than top speed.
Compared to cars, 125cc insurance is generally very affordable. Factors like your age, location, and where the bike is stored (garage vs street) affect the price. Buying a used bike can often lower premiums compared to a brand new model.
Small engines work harder than big bikes. Generally, anything under 10,000 miles is considered low. However, service history matters more than mileage. A well-maintained bike with 20,000 miles is a safer buy than a neglected one with 5,000. At KH Motorcycles, we inspect every bike regardless of mileage.
If you are riding on a CBT with L-plates, you cannot use motorways. You must stick to A-roads and B-roads. You can only ride on motorways if you have passed your full test (A1, A2, or A licence), though we generally recommend avoiding them on a 125cc due to the speed difference.
Not if you are riding on L-plates (CBT). It is illegal to carry a pillion passenger until you have passed your full practical motorcycle test.
